What Happens Behind the Tile in a Custom Shower

The tile is what you see. Here’s the work underneath that keeps a shower working.

Marble steam shower with sculpted niches

The tile is the part you’ll look at every day. The work that keeps a shower working for years is the part you’ll never see again once the tile goes on.

It starts with the surface

Walls need to be flat and solid, and the floor needs to slope to the drain so water doesn’t sit. Problems here are simple to fix now and expensive to fix after the tile is set.

Then comes the waterproofing

Tile and grout aren’t waterproof on their own. The waterproofing behind them is what keeps water out of your walls and floor. Corners, niches, benches and plumbing holes all need extra care, because that’s where gaps tend to happen.

Then we test it

We test the shower before any tile goes on. It’s the last easy moment to catch a problem, so it’s worth the time.

Then the tile goes on

This is where the layout, the cuts and the details come together. Andrey and the crew set the tile with care, and Andrey checks the quality himself.

Last, we walk through it with you

When the work is finished, we go through it with you so you know how it all came together.
